The Ukrainian Children Ensemble is called "Vinochok", meaning garland. We are a small group set up in January 2024 to enable children to enjoy the special power of music to help with trauma, wellbeing and cultural identity.
Vinochok was established by Simone Schehtman of birminghamforukraine.org, at the start of the emergency to help Ukranians flee the terrible war in Spring 2022, to find safe shelter here in Birmingham and across the West Midands. Simone and her small team of translators and local hosts have helped over 1000 Ukranians to come and start to make independent lives in the area.
The focus of the music played is to enable cultural retention, so it is very special that a partnership has been established with Brama Charity of Solihull and musicians from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, under the artistic direction of young student composer Mikhail Rozhin.
We are proud to share our beautiful Ukrainian culture and music with diverse communities across the West Midlands and beyond. The repertoire has been carefully chosen by the children, who are excited to share a unique Ukrainian perspective on universal human values such as compassion, love, freedom, and peace expressed through the songs and music.
You can see some of the fantastic music by watching the video below, and take a look at our brochure for more information about Vinochok.
